(Long Beach, California) A December 20, 2023 press release from the City of Long Beach, California announced the availability of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) via Atlantic Aviation at Long Beach Airport (IATA: LGB, ICAO: KLGB, FAA LID: LGB), thereby rendering both of LGB’s fixed-base operators - Atlantic and Signature Aviation - suppliers of SAF.

Atlantic Aviation plans to maintain a supply of SAF volumes to meet all customer demand, according to the press release.

“Atlantic is keenly aware of general aviation’s responsibility to combat rising emissions and work towards a cleaner environment,” said Eric Newman, VP of Commercial Strategy & Sustainability at Atlantic Aviation. “SAF is jet fuel, providing the most tangible near-term solution to make an impact on aviation emissions.

Aiport Director Cynthia Guidry stressed that “sustainability is a priority at Long Beach Airport, and collaboration with our tenants is an essential part in delivering greener options.”

“This is a shared journey with our business partners at LGB, and together we are ensuring a more sustainable future for us all,” Guidry said.

In 2022, Signature Aviation announced that it had expanded its distribution of SAF to all ten of its owned California FBOs, including its facilities at LGB, San Francisco International (since 2020), San Diego International, Santa Barbara Municipal, Fresno Yosemite International, and Palm Springs International airports, in addition to Los Angeles International, Oakland International, Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International, and Van Nuys airports, according to AIN.

A 2022 AIN article explained that California is a “hotbed of SAF production and use” due to the state’s favorable tax incentives.

Signature Aviation began permanent supplies of Neste SAF at both its San Francisco FBO and its FBO in the United Kingdom’s London Luton Airport (IATA: LTN, ICAO: EGGW) through its Signature Renew program in 2020. At that time, a deal with Neste called for Signature to purchase five million gallons of SAF - the largest SAF purchase agreement by an FBO operator to date.

The City of Long Beach’s Dec. 20 press release noted that beyond expanding its services to include SAF for purchase, Atlantic Aviation is also redeveloping its complex to include other sustainably-minded projects at LGB. Specifically, the company is finalizing a 30,000-square-foot hangar with additional office space that will be topped with a 1.1-million-kilowatt solar installation expected to support all electricity needs of the facility.
